মারুফের জন্ম রাজশাহীর মতিহার থানার মৌলভী বুধপাড়ায়। নাবিক হওয়ার কোনো পরিকল্পনা ছিল না তার। ভর্তি হয়েছিলেন রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রকৌশল (আইসিই) বিভাগে। কিন্তু এক বছরের মাথায় সিদ্ধান্ত বদলে ফেলেন। হয়ে উঠেন নাবিক। হংকংভিত্তিক একটি অয়েল ট্যাংকারে ‘সেকেন্ড অফিসার’ হিসেবে কর্মরত মারুফ।
